Diary 1865 [photocopy]

Photoreproduction of diary kept by James Graves, superintendent of the Valencia Cable Station, the terminus of the 1865 attempt by Cyrus W. Field's Atlantic Telegraph Company to lay a transatlantic telegraph cable. This cable, laid by the steamship Great Eastern, was lost in the Atlantic Ocean. The diary documents the process of bringing the Irish end of the cable ashore, and the investigations into its sudden failure. The company succesfully completed laying the first Transatlantic cable in its next attempt, the following year.
